JIRA for Agile Teams – Overview
JIRA for Agile Teams is a training course for people using JIRA Software to support agile delivery. The course puts an active case study at the centre of the learning activity. Rather than spend the first few hours learning about administrative functions, we kick off with a lively and engaging project. Delegates will be tasked with building a website from scratch using their choice of technical or non-technical tools. As this project grows in complexity, delegates will use JIRA to manage the work and learn a wide range of advanced features by using them directly.
The training course is based on our experience in agile product delivery using Scrum, Kanban and bespoke agile workflows. While the focus of the course is not to teach agile practices, these techniques will form the basis of the exercises so a familiarity with the basics will be helpful. For those that are completely new to Agile, some basic introductory information will be provided before the course.
By the end of the course, delegates will be more confident in the following key areas:
- Defining projects in JIRA for Scrum and Kanban.
- High-level planning and analysis using product backlogs and work items.
- Short term planning and task breakdown.
- Understanding how JIRA supports forecasting, reporting and dashboards
- Using JIRA with multiple teams.

The agenda for the course is as follows:
|Delivery Activity||JIRA Skills Learned|
Teams will log into their accounts and learn the basics of JIRA by creating a new project. The fundamentals of Scrum and Kanban will be defined, and their corresponding JIRA templates will be discovered.
Collaborating to Define Requirements
Teams will simulate a product initiation workshop by creating a Scrum backlog.
Teams will create a new sprint, and estimate how many items may be delivered by doing a full task breakdown.
Teams will use the Scrum board to co-ordinate their activities in a simulation of a real sprint.
Managing the Product Backlog
Teams will learn how to use JIRA to co-ordinate their analysis activities during Scrum delivery by creating a rolling backlog projection and managing their backlog refinement activities
Establishing greater control
Teams will establish an empirical approach to sprint planning and forecasting and create a dashboard to maintain visibility.
Teams will create a release plan and explore tools to track forecast delivery dates
Alternative work streams
Teams will create a new project to handle a flow of work that doesn’t fit the Scrum template, instead using the Kanban template to model and support their process
Teams will learn how to use JIRA to apply the five principles of Kanban:
Teams will consider their delivery model from strategic objectives through to individual task delivery. Options for programme delivery using Kanban boards will be explored.
